Philippe Starck (1949- )
French product designer Philippe Starck is probably the most well-known designer in the New Design style. His designs range from interiors to mass produced consumer goods such as toothbrushes, chairs and even houses. Educated in Paris at Ecole Nissim de Camondo, he founded his first design firm in 1968. In 1969, he became art director along with Pierre Cardin. Starck's product designs are of usable household items which he helps to market for mass production. His products and furnishings are typically constructed using unusual combinations of materials, and are often stylized, streamlined and organic in their look. Starck is famous for his furniture designs for Italian manufacturer Kartell, many of which are made from polycarbonate plastic. World famous pieces include the transparent Louis Ghost chair, the Ero|s| chair, and Bubble Club sofa.
